675 SQUARE FEET FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR -  NYC'S UPPER WEST SIDE

This 675 square-foot apartment, home to a family of four, is a study in small space living. Problems with the original space included: having to pass through one of the bedrooms to get to the common areas, outdated finishes, and no place to eat or work. Joanna came up with a simple solution; closing large French doors that took up too much room and opening up a new doorway to create two private bedrooms. The plumbing and all other surfaces were upgraded, but at the clients' request, Joanna reused most of the kitchen cabinets and kept the original bath tub. She found space in the apartment for two separate dining areas and created more storage.  Joanna's plan even anticipates a solution for when the children are teenagers and need separate bedrooms.

PHASE 2

675 Square Foot Apartment Becomes Three Bedroom- Phase 2 Renovation

When it was time for the twins to have their own bedrooms, Joanna had the plan ready. The primary bedroom moved to the kids’ room. Custom storage was built-in. A section of the long living room became one twin’s roomy bedroom. A portion of the second bedroom became an open and airy room for the other twin. The new, smaller living room is open to the hallway now, providing light and air through the common spaces. Custom built storage creates delineated spaces and provides display space. A picture frame TV blends into the wall. A new, large sectional provides plenty of space for the family and guests to visit and relax. The kitchen and bathroom remain the same. The apartment feels large and open. There is a space for everyone and every need.
